Dee Dee - my deepest condolences to you and your beautiful family in this very difficult hour. The memorial tributes all speak highly of a teacher, coach and mentor who uplifted and inspired his students (and colleagues) to be their best by his compassionate and caring nature, his dedication and work ethic, and his example of faith. I am keeping you close to my heart in prayer and hope you will find comfort knowing that Rel is home in the arms of the angels.

Dear Didi and family, We were very sorry to hear of Rel's passing. I first met Rel when I started teaching at CCH in 1975/76. He was a calming influence for me as a new teacher and always had a soft spoken manner that was more than welcoming. A few years later, we moved to his neighborhood in southeast Lethbridge and saw him again as the open and friendly neighbor you hope to live near by.

Our family is greatly appreciative to have known Rel as he generously shared his incredible talents with us. Rel was a patient mentor early in Dave's teaching and coaching career; his most enduring lesson was the importance of caring deeply about student athletes. Rel also demonstrated to each of us the dedication needed to be a successful educator and the hours of preparation needed each and every day in a profession that is in the service of students. His legacy of success and compassion will live on through his children, and through the amazing patience and dedication of DeeDee. Our family had the greatest respect for Rel and know that his generous presence and infectious laugh will be felt in the community for decades to come.

We are all very saddened by the news of Mr. Delbello's passing. He put up with all 5 of us in sometimes very trying circumstances. When you are young, you just don't see things as clearly as you should, and I guess he knew that. Many years later, when I looked up through teary eyes at a hand that was offered to me as I sat and wept at my mother and father's funeral, it was his. There are very few things that I remember about that day, but I will never forget the respect and care he gave us that day, the tremendous respect I felt for him, and the sadness I felt about lost opportunities of respect as an immature high school student. I hope that you can find some comfort in knowing the many lives he touched and influenced, the many he never knew he touched and influenced, and all like us who were gifted by his compassion and kindness throughout the years well after high school.

I owe an awful lot to Mr. Delbello. In high school I was a mess. My mother was dying of terminal cancer and my parents, who did the best that they could, did not know how to deal with this life struggle and I coped in a dysfunctional way. Both of my parents were immigrants, both never completed elementary school, and K-12 schooling did not come easy to me as I did not learn study habits. In my last semester in high school I was suspended, and Mr. Delbello was a liaison to the principal. In my last semester Mr. Delbello took me under his wing to help me graduate and part of that was him tapping into my leisure passion that was part of coping - powerlifting! In an independent study I wrote two papers for Mr. Delbello, one looked at the mental health benefits of weightlifting and physical activities and the other was the use of healthy supplements. This was the first time I wrote two 10-page academic papers on a subject that was intrinsically motivating to me. I loved writing these two papers and realized that I could go off to university and study leisure as coping. I eventually became a university professor and licensed mental health counselor and have now written over 100 articles and six textbooks on the topic of leisure and its influence on mental health. I have Mr. Delbello to thank for so much of this, as he helped me find my path in the difficult and joyful journey of life. Not only did he help me graduate from high school, which I am not sure I would have without him, he also illuminated an academic path in front of me that I did not realize even existed. As a Professor today, there is a part of him in my soul, there is a part of him in my professional identity, and there is a part of him in each classroom that I walk into. Due to this wonderful man I learned empathy and look out for struggling students, especially first-generation students, at the university I work at. He was a teacher who exemplified a care ethic and made a huge difference in my life, and I know in many other lives. He will not be forgotten.
