PHYLLIS DELPHINE RIEHL ‘Del Riehl’ ‘Grandma Del’, born June 27, 1933, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a long and courageous battle with Chronic Lymphoma Leukemia on Monday, March 16, 2009 in Lethbridge AB, 75 years young. She leaves behind the love of her life, sweethearts since they were 19, Glenn Riehl, husband of 56 years. Del leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter Barbara (Bob) Cole of Lethbridge, one son David (Susan) Riehl of Lethbridge, granddaughters Lindsay (Scott) Kornelson of Lethbridge, and Cyndi (Jeff) Logelin of Strathmore, and grandsons Kelly (Carly) Riehl of Grande Prairie, Jordan Napper (Teri Vander Heyden), Dustin Napper (Alison Riegle), Loran Napper of Lethbridge and John Adam Ziolkowski of Ontario. She also leaves behind one brother Ivan (Bev) Hopp of Prince George BC, sisters-in-law and families of Jeanette & Charlie Miner of Drayton Valley, Rose & Gordon Hawley of Calgary, Laura Gorzitza of Vulcan and brother-in-law Bill Romanchuk of Lethbridge, her favourite aunt Bertha Sherring of Lethbridge, aunt Vi Travalia and uncle Art Valin of Lethbridge, as well as special friends Tom Shiels, with whom she spent half her life playing music, Mavis Steward, Art & Carol Ann Bedster, Sharon & Bill Treber, George & Ann Gorzitza, Verna & Al Hawley, Hans & Carol Isele, Linda Sackman and neighbor Shirley Beach, along with many other friends and family. Del was predeceased by her father Ted Hopp of Edmonton in 1971, her mother Helga (Hopp) Rose of Hope BC in 1981, parents-in-law Dave & Mary Riehl, sister-in law Bernice Romanchuk, brother-in-law Walter Gorzitza, nephew Darrell Gorzitza and best friend Mary Ann Shiels. Del & Glenn worked together to build Riehl Excavating Ltd., better known as Draco Excavating. They loved to camp and she always had her accordion close to her. They retired during the late 1970’s to spend winters in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and summers in their motorhome, enjoying over 40 years camping at Gold Creek with many friends and family who returned year after year. She was self-taught and managed to play many instruments - accordion, keyboards, guitars, mandolins, and ukuleles - if it made music she had to have it. Del truly loved music, and enjoyed playing bluegrass wherever she was, with many special friends including Noel, Jenss and the LSCO Thursday night jam sessions. In Hawaii she met her uke partner Kurt Lindner and Carl & Judy McClusky, Kona Bob who taught her to play slack key, her uke teacher Willie Pereira and her class at the KTA, closest friends Pat Neerdaels of Wisconsin, Jo Albinati of Grande Prairie, Leabert Lindsay of Kona and many others, too numerous to mention for fear of excluding someone.
