DORIS JEAN DE GROOT (nee Moore) went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the age of 92 years.
Doris was born Oct. 16, 1922 on the Moore family farm near Ryerson, Saskatchewan. She and her twin brother Wesley followed older sisters Eileen and Edith and were later joined by younger brothers Ken and Vernon.
Growing up on the farm, Doris was very skilled at milking cows, and loved to play soft ball at school. Her favorite position was first base, with no glove (only the catcher had a glove back then). She loved to do word puzzles and could recite the alphabet backwards as fast as others could say it forwards, a talent she retained for most of her life. Her brother Vernon, 9 years her younger, has fond memories of going to school with Doris, a 2 1/5 mile cross country trek, although they sometimes rode Trixie, a family horse, or Vernon rode on the handlebars of Doris' bicycle.
After finishing school, Doris moved to Winnipeg where she attended business college, then worked as a personal shopper at Hudson's Bay. She faithfully attended Bethesda Church and was involved in the Union Gospel Mission.
In Winnipeg Doris met and married Ed De Groot. Together they raised 4 children, Jack, Gloria, Darlene and Greg. They loved to travel and enjoyed many epic road trips, visiting relatives in Louisiana, British Columbia and California. Doris also visited Ireland and loved to entertain relatives who came over from Ireland.
Although she never learned to read music, young Doris taught herself to play an old organ that was given to her family. She loved having a piano in the house so she could play and sing her favorite hymns. She also played at the children's hospital in Winnipeg and at the nursing home where she later lived.
Once the nest was empty, Ed and Doris moved to Lethbridge, Alberta where they made many friends and enjoyed spending time with their kids and grandkids. Here Doris was actively involved in the Salvation Army, women's home bible studies and generously supported various missionary endeavors. Out-going and friendly, Doris made friends everywhere she lived and will be greatly missed by all she knew, especially the staff at the Edith Cavell Care Centre. We will not know this side of heaven how many lives were blessed by knowing Doris.
She is survived by her children Jack (Emily), Darlene, Gloria (Michael), and Greg (Melody), brothers Ken (Lori) and Vernon (Margaret) as well as numerous grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren; one was just born June 14th and another is due in August.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Ed, her parents John and Jean Moore, sisters Eileen and Edith and her twin brother Wesley.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
