DALTON ARNOLD MARTIN

It is with great love and sadness that we announce that Dalton Arnold Martin, beloved husband of Anne, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2009 at the age of 85 years. Dalton was born July 2, 1923 in Kincaid, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the army in 1942 and served as an artillery surveyor with the 19th Field Regiment. Dad saw action in France, Belgium, Holland, landing with the first wave on D-Day at St. Aubin sur Mer, Juno Beach. He returned home in December 1945 and worked briefly for the CPR. He married Anne Semesock on December 31, 1949 in Windsor, Ontario. After living briefly in Moose Jaw, they settled in Lethbridge, Alberta where Dalton (‘Red’) worked for the Federal Government (PFRA) as a surveyor. He received his commissions as both a Canada and an Alberta Land Surveyor in the late 1950s. He went into private practice in 1962 founding Milne & Martin and subsequently his own survey firm, D.A. Martin & Associates, presently Martin Geomatic Consultants Ltd. Dad never really did retire and was at the office on his last day. At one time or another, all of his sons and daughters worked for the family business. He taught them well: four became professional engineers; two became Alberta Land Surveyors. Dalton was much respected for his expertise in Land Surveying as well as his strong moral and work ethic. He often helped many clients who could not afford the services of a surveyor. Dalton was an honest, gentle and caring man. He was proud to be part of the Canadian Legion, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past member of the Lethbridge Miners’ Library. His hobbies included darts, golf, and curling. Until recently, Dad could be found every Sunday as an usher at St. Patrick’s Church. He is survived by his sister Kezia ‘Ky’ (Vernon) Young, Regina Saskatchewan, sister in law Leona Martin, brother in law Bill Kortge and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Mary Ann Martin, sisters, Vina, Arona, Myrtle, Eleita and brother Elvin. Dalton will always be dearly loved and missed by Anne, their ten children and their families: Ed and Caroline Martin, Faye and John Henderson, Bill Martin and Liz Denham, Allan and Alison Martin, Susan and Pat Sheridan, Ray Martin, Dan and Laurie Martin, Sharon and Al Breland, David Martin, and Shelley and Jocelyn Lahaie. He will forever be in the hearts of 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Dad devoted his whole life to his wife and all of his family. We are most grateful to the Lethbridge EMS, doctors, nurses, and staff at the CRH emergency department, and particularly the trauma unit at Foothills Hospital. During his brief stay they made his last hours comfortable. Relatives and friends are invited to prayers and tributes at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, corner of 10th Street & 4th Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend Tim Boyle, celebrant. Interment to follow in the Field of Honour, Mountain View Cemetery. In memory of Dalton, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317-10th Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2M7 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, #207, 542-7th Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2H1.
