MR. WILLIAM STANLEY CHARLES, beloved husband of the late Dorothy Jean Charles, of Lethbridge, passed away at St. Therese’s Villa on July 2, 2011 at the age of 96 years. Stan is the loving father of Chris (Dawn) of Lethbridge. He is also survived by his grandson, Dwayne (Laura) and his great grandson, Carson; his nephews and their children: Kerry (Barb), and David and Elizabeth; Murray (Cindy), and Richard and Michelle. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Jean; mother and father, Olive and Leonard; son, Roger; sister-in-law, Ena; and recently his brother, Donald. Stanley was born in Wednesbury, England on September 17, 1914 to Leonard and Olive Charles. At a young age of 9, his family moved from England to Canada living in the Aden area near Milk River. In 1926 they moved to Lethbridge where Stanley received his schooling. He was a Sergeant in the war in the First Division Petrol as a Dispatch Rider. While stationed in Brighton, he met Jean and on June 19, 1943 they were married. Stanley and Jean welcomed their first son, Roger, into the world on July 27, 1944. After the war, they returned to Canada where their second son, Chris, was born on June 22, 1956. Stanley worked at Eaton’s in the Drapery Department for a number of years and retiring in 1979. He had many interests to keep him involved, busy, into and out of trouble. Some of his interests included playing sax and banjo in the band “High Levels” and being involved in the German Canadian Club. Stanley also entertained at Southland Nursing Home by dancing gracefully with Jean. As a member of the local Legion, he attended their weekly dances regularly. He was also an assistant parade marshal for a number of years in the Lethbridge parades. Stanley was very handy, versatile, and creative. He could draw up in detail any plan or project. There was not much to stop him once he had an idea (except Jean). Just ask the neighbours! He also enjoyed traveling. Stanley had made several trips to England for family visits, and in his 90th year, he enjoyed a vacation on a Caribbean cruise. A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME (2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge) on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 1:00 pm with Canon James Robinson officiating and interment to follow at Archmount Cemetery.
