CECIL SHERRET

CECIL SHERRET passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, March 1, 2008, after a long battle with prostate cancer. Cecil was born on November 7, 1922 to Andrew and Margaret Sherret on their farm outside Coalhurst. Cecil was predeceased by his loving wife Ruth in 2004. He leaves to mourn his sons: Ralph of Calgary, Andrew of Sydney B.C., his daughter Cheryl LeSergent of Lethbridge and his son-in-law Fred LeSergent of Williams Lake B.C. Also mourning his death are Cecil’s brothers James (Joan) and Gordon (Lorraine) of Cranbrook and his sisters Helen Walkley and Gwen Wills of Cranbrook and Carol (Norman) Redigger of Preeceville Saskatchewan; his sisters-in-law Annette Sherret of Edmonton, Lena Sherret of Cranbrook, Florence (Edgar) Boschee of Medicine Hat, Violet (Walter) Keim of Carstairs and Erna Straub of Lacombe. Cecil also leaves to mourn numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours in Lethbridge and across Canada. Special mention is made of the Rick and Sharon Sandham family of Kipp, who took Cecil (and Ruth) into their family, providing many garden plots, some chances at hands on farming and several children to love as surrogate grandchildren. Cecil started off in life as the fourth of eleven children from a small farm in the Coalhurst area. Because of circumstances within the family Cecil often took over the running of the farm and every chance he got would use farm work and harvesting as chances to escape the confines of the school room to be outside working. In 1940 Cecil moved to Medicine Hat where he met his wife to be, Ruth, while waiting to enlist in the RCAF. Cecil enlisted in 1942 and began his 30 year career in the Air Force. Throughout his career he relied on the organizational and leadership skills he acquired as a young worker on the family farm. He was educated and trained by the service, and in turn instructed and educated many new recruits to the ways of being a top notch Airman. Cecil was never afraid to explore, learn and share his knowledge. During his lifetime, Cecil was always very active and if he wasn’t out gardening, fishing, camping or golfing, he could be found playing a great game of cards or curling. He enjoyed the company of others and could always spin an interesting tale. In his final years Cecil found comfort within the Seventh Day Adventist church and discovered a wonderful and supportive church family. Belonging brought him comfort and security within the hand of the Lord. Cecil will always be remembered as the tall fellow who stood his ground and took care of those around him. A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Friday, March 7, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Olaf Classen officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317-10th Street South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2M7 for prostate cancer research.
