Belanger, Carol

February 5, 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of CAROLINE “CAROL” GRACE FUNK BELANGER announce her peaceful passing at the Good Samaritans West Highlands, on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025, at the age of 86 years, with her loving husband by her side.

Carol will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, Len Belanger; children: Michelle Ross, Leo (Colette) Belanger, and Shari Belanger; as well as numerous relatives and friends. We will miss her beautiful smile, her cheeky sense of humour, and hearing her say, “I love you very much!”

She was predeceased by her grandson Terry Belanger; son-in-law, Angus Ross; her parents, Jake & Annie Funk; and Siblings, Willard, Jim, Lillian, Florence and Gerry.

Carol was a military wife with much courage and a zest for life. As a young wife, during Len’s military career, she raised her first two children overseas in Northern Germany, from 1960/63, not knowing any German language, no phone, no TV, no immediate or extended family, and hadn’t learned to drive yet. They took family holidays in England, Scotland, Wales, and Holland, usually camping with their young family. When they returned to Canada in January of 1964, she was very pregnant with their third child and just made the deadline to fly home with Len and the kids. Carol and Len lived in Greater Victoria, where their daughter Shari was born, for seven years before returning to Germany for another three years. This time further south in the Schwartzvald area. For our first day of school, she crocheted a sweater for Leo, and ponchos for Michelle and Shari, staying up all night so the girls could wear their new handmade ponchos to school!! This time around, Mom had her drivers license and often helped other military wives, picking them up to go grocery shopping etc. She spent many hours on the road picking up the kids directly from school or meeting them at the bus stop to take Leo, Michelle and Shari to skating, hockey, girl guides, brownies, and cub scouts. Mom and Dad were very active within the community. Mom with all the driving she did for the kids with their activities, and was a Brownie Leader wish weekly Brownie Meetings, and taking the entire group on a pack holiday to the Ortenberg Castle one weekend. We learned many valuable skills with Mom….to cook, clean, grocery shop, sew, to take care of family, and contribute to community - but most of all to love.

She loved her husband, Len, very, very much! Nothing fancy, just sitting together, holding hands, right to her last breath.

At Carol’s request, no service will be held.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Good Samaritan West Highlands, for their care and compassion.
