Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Wendy; his daughters, Kasha (Koji) and Brynne (Tyson); and his siblings, Ron and Linda. He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and May Thurston, and his sibling, Pat. Bruce’s memory will also be held close by a wide circle of colleagues and friends whose lives he touched.

Through decades of consulting, including his leadership of Management Resource Services, Bruce championed small businesses, sharing his expertise, mentoring leaders, and supporting organizations through periods of change. He also shared his knowledge as a long-serving faculty member in the Dhillon School of Business at the University of Lethbridge.

Bruce was guided by unwavering values in everything he pursued. He approached both life and work as opportunities to learn, evolve, and contribute. A passionate advocate for lifelong learning, he earned numerous accolades and academic achievements throughout his career. As a CPA, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award, and most recently, the Legacy Award from the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, honouring his impact on the business community.

Growing up in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, Bruce found immense happiness in the outdoors and in the simple joys of life. He loved being in nature and cycling, skiing, camping, and walking. He cherished reading, coffee with friends, and staying up-to-date on the latest in technology and news. These activities reflected his spirit: grounded, curious, and engaged with the world around him.

Bruce embodied the belief that meaningful lives are built through connection, service, and the courage to reinvent oneself. His legacy lives on through his family, his colleagues, mentees, and the values he lived by every day.

R. Bruce Thurston, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit, with family by his side, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the age of 70 years.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Chinook Regional Hospital, the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, and St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional compassion.

Friends, colleagues, and peers are invited to celebrate Bruce’s life at the LETHBRIDGE TRADE & CONVENTION CENTRE, 101 Exhibition Way South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 1:00 P.M.

In honour of Bruce’s advocacy for heart health and local community access to cardiac care, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bringing Hearts Home Cardiac Campaign (Cardiac Sciences Capital Campaign), c/o Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation: https://crhfoundation.ca/cardiaccare/

Dear Wendy and family. Pat and I are so sorry for your loss and extend our deepest sympathy. When Pat worked at the U of L, he met Bruce and often commented on what an extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and compassionate man he was. Wendy, you and Bruce have always been a positive influence on everyone who has had the pleasure to meet you. May many wonderful memories help you to navigate such a deep loss.

Helen McDonald, January 10, 2026

I feel so fortunate to have made the acquaintance of Bruce and get to know him. Such a pleasant and dynamic person and always that nice smile on his face. I will miss our coffeehouse chats that we would have when we happened to bump into each other at one of them. A very well respected and well liked person that will be greatly missed.

Dear Wendy, Kasha, and Brynne, I wanted to reach out and say thank you for Bruce.Over the past twenty years, he has had a real and lasting impact on my life and my work. I’ve taken him with me through every stage of my professional journey, and I’ll continue to carry his influence and his voice with me going forward. Thank you for sharing his time, his knowledge, and his wisdom so generously. I know how much of himself he gave to others. Bruce was more than a mentor to me. He was a very good friend. I still remember the first time I met him. He drew a triangle and wrote “Work” at the top, “People” on one side, and “Relationships” on the other. He said, “Every business exists to get work done. It takes people and relationships to do the work. You’re too focused on the relationships — focus on the work, and the relationships will come.” That lesson stuck with me, and I’ve carried it ever since. There is so much more I could say, but mostly I just want you to know how grateful I am for the relationship I had with Bruce. It’s one I’ll carry with me forever. Thank you, Bruce. With love and sympathy, Brand

Bev Nagata, January 8, 2026

Our sincere condolences to the family. I had the opportunity to work with and get to know Bruce on a couple of projects. I appreciated his humor and good nature but also his way of "righting the ship" in pretty straight forward terms when required. He kept us focused and on task with a laugh and I definitely learned from his approach.

Rob & Rhonda Crow, January 8, 2026

Carola Friesen, January 8, 2026

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Bruce, even for a short time. His mentorship, guidance, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on me. Bruce had a rare ability to speak with purpose, connect meaningfully with people at every level of an organization, and challenge others to be better each day. His leadership was grounded in respect, clarity, and a sincere desire to see others succeed. Although our time together was brief, the lessons and perspective Bruce shared continue to shape how I view my work and leadership today. His words carried meaning, his actions reflected integrity, and his influence extended far beyond the moments we spent together. I will always be thankful for the impact he had on my growth, and his legacy will continue through the people he guided and inspired.

The Wrights - Beverly, Barbara, Bill, January 6, 2026

Bruce was not only a close friend, but an incredible mentor. My journey with him began as a student in his management accounting courses, and over time evolved into helping him mark assignments, serving as a case judge in his classes after graduation, and later sharing many coffees and lunches together. Those conversations meant so much to me. He always had a notebook close by, carefully laying out his thoughts, insights, and perspectives on business and life in a way that was both thoughtful and generous. I can say without hesitation that I would not be where I am today, professionally, or personally, without Bruce’s mentorship, guidance, and unwavering support over the years. He challenged me, encouraged me, and believed in me, and that made a lasting difference. You should be incredibly proud of the remarkable man he was. His loss will be forever felt, and his impact on so many lives is a true testament to who he was. I am deeply grateful to be one of the many people whose life was shaped by Bruce. Please know you are in our thoughts during this difficult time.

Tyler Brack and Ashley Crabb, January 5, 2026

Though time and distance kept us apart, his passing is felt and he is remembered. With sympathy and respect for Aunt Wendy, Kasha, Brynne, and all who loved him. Thinking also of Uncle Ron and Aunt Linda during this time. May his memory bring comfort and honour a life well lived.

Ryan Stewart, January 4, 2026

Bruce has forever had an influence on my life. I was a young kinesiology student, and took an intro to business class. In that class, Bruce introduced me to a world I had never considered before, but loved. I made the decision to change majors, and went into business management. I never had the chance to tell him that, but he was the main catalyst that has now set the course for my career.

Alex Andrews , January 4, 2026

Bruce was always up for a chat and embarking his wisdom. He got me a book “the founders dilemma” that will always remind me of him and his legacy when I see that book. I hope his family and beloved are able to find the patience and strength during these tough times. Bruce will be missed dearly.

Ammar Shahid, January 4, 2026

Another good one gone - far too soon - gone from our eyes, but not from our hearts or memories. I met Bruce when he was a mischievous red-headed nine year old accordion player who had a disarming smile and drole but focused sense of humour. We maintained a periodic correspondence for over 45 years and I will miss it - and him. Our deepest and sincerest condolences to you Wendy and Kasha and Brynne and to Ron and Linda.

Jim and Anella Stewart, January 3, 2026

Dear Wendy and family, Bruce was one of the first people I met when Paige and I moved to Lethbridge. His kindness and willingness to engage in a quick chat made me feel welcome in a new town. Knowing him over the years, and reconnecting when Wendy and I worked together, only reinforced my impression that Bruce made a good difference to the world. My sincere and heartfelt condolences.

Kevin Wood, December 31, 2025

Dear Wendy, Kasha and Brynn, Thinking of the three of you at this time. Bruce always had time to chat with me when I would see him at Bread, Milk and Honey. He would proudly tell me if what you girls were doing in that soft gentle voice of his. His dry sense of humor would also come forth. It always was a treat for me to see him. “Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is the remaking if life” -Anne Roiphe
