Bridget Many Grey Horses (nee BlackWater) “Misami’saan” also known as “Mademoiselle” passed away peacefully Friday November 13, 2009 at the age of 80 years. Bridget was born March 3, 1929 on the Blood Reserve to Henry Cochrane (BlackWater) and Mary Rider (Matsiapi). She spent her early years at St. Mary’s Indian Residential school and was there from infancy until 16 years of age. She had hoped to further her education and become a nurse but circumstances prevented her from following this path. She married Cecil HolyWhiteman and together they had 3 children – Cecil, Joseph, and Rita. After the passing of her first husband, she married Douglas Many Grey Horses. They had 7 children together: Rosie (Jackie Crowshoe), Douglas (Carolyn), Bryan, Audrey (Gary), Calvert (Connie), Valerie, Rex (Yolanda). They settled in the st. Mary’s dam area. Bridget moved north and worked in Edmonton and Dawson Creek. She moved to Vancouver, BC in the mid 60’s. Bridget married Rolf Langenbach. She spoke of Rolf as very good man and together they raised her granddaughter Lanna Dee Many Grey Horses. Bridget proudly worked as a housekeeper for the Malibu Princess ferry for several years. Later, she lived and worked in Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Bridget had many fond memories of Vancouver and hosted many of her relatives of the Blood Reserve when they came to Vancouver. In 1989, Bridget lost her daughter Rita Holy White Man – a life changing event for her. In 1997, Bridget returned to Alberta to be closer to her family. Bridget sadly lost her eldest son Cecil in 2006 whom she had a close relationship to and fondly referred to him as her “roommate”. She was deeply saddened by the loss of her special granddaughter: Kari-lynn “Tweety” Soop whom she brought special fry bread to daily.
She also looked forward to her visits from her sons Joe, Douglas, Bryan, Calvert and Rex. She enjoyed living with her grandsons Darryl and Truman. She, also, had a special relationship to Kevin and his kids whom she called her “Boss”. She spent the remaining years of her life living with her daughter Audrey who took exceptional care of her. Her favorite past times were spent with her bingo and casino partners Jackie and Rosie where she was known as “lady luck”. Grandma Bridget also spoke of missing her daughter Valerie and family whom had a close bond to while in Vancouver. Bridget will be remembered by all as a hard working, generous and fiercely independent woman with a great sense of humour. She took pride in all of her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments especially her cowboys and cowgirls. Grandma Bridget would speak highly of her family’s participation in Rodeo events.
