TED BOCHAN passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the age of 65 years after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Ted was born in Calgary on October 26, 1945 and moved to Lethbridge that same year with his parents John and Mary Bochan. Ted received his elementary school education at Central and Bowman schools, later attending Hamilton Junior High and graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. He furthered his education in the field of business administration attending the Lethbridge Community College and University of Lethbridge. In 1983 he received his Associate Degree in Fire Science from Spokane Community College. Ted began his working career in 1965 as a Park Warden working with Alberta Provincial Parks at locations such as Willow Creek Provincial Park, Bragg Creek Provincial Park and Park Lake Provincial Park. In the fall of 1968 Ted made what he called the best decision of his life. He married Robbie Burton on August 30, 1968 and became a firefighter with the Lethbridge Fire Department in September of 1968. In 1986 Ted was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief. He was responsible for the day to day operations of the city’s four Fire Stations as well as supervision of both the Fire Prevention and Training Divisions. In 1986 Ted co-authored the book “Lethbridge A Century of Firefighting” with Dr. Alex Johnston. During his years as Deputy Chief Ted had the responsibility of rebuilding the department’s aging fleet of emergency vehicles. Prior to his retirement from the Fire Department, Ted and his wife established E-Max Emergency Services Consultants. Their company business took them across Western Canada providing training, planning and equipment acquisition for Fire and EMS organizations. In 2002, Ted was recruited by Alberta Sustainable Resources, Forest Protection Division to a newly established position. For the next nine years Ted travelled extensively providing training and community fire protection planning across Alberta. His duties took him to many of Alberta’s largest wildfires where he supervised crews assigned to community protection. In 1999, Ted was awarded a Lifetime Membership to the Alberta Fire Chief’s Association for dedicated service on their executive. In 2000, Ted was awarded the prestigious professional designation of C.F.O “Chief Fire Officer” from the Canadian Association Fire Chiefs. This was the twelfth such award given in Canada. In May of 2003, Ted was a member of a firefighting team who received the Premiers Award of Excellence for successfully defending the community of Conklin from Alberta’s largest wildfire. Ted’s favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the 25 years with family and friends at their recreational property at Duck Lake, Montana. Ted is survived by his wife Robbie of 42 years, their sons Tim (Krystal), Bobby (Andrea) and his three grandsons Braden, Conner and Nicholas. A Celebration of his life will be held at the Coast Hotel, 526 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, on Monday, July 4, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. with Charlie Brown officiating.
