Mr. WILLIAM (BILL) WINTER, of Sunrise Village, Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Doris Winter, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the age of 88. Bill is survived by his son Wayne (Wilma) Winter; son Jerry Winter; and son Doug (Nancy) Winter all of Lethbridge; grandchildren Hal Winter, Lethbridge; Glen (Kerry) Winter and their children Lindsay and Ben of Medicine Hat; Lynette (Kris) Godfrey and their children Luke and Paige of Red Deer; Rhett and Teale Winter of Lethbridge. Bill was predeceased by his wife Doris, his daughter Darlene, his son Dea and his grandson Mark Coyne. Bill was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on December 7, 1920 where he completed his schooling. While working for Safeway store, he met and married Doris Anderson on December 21, 1941. In these early war years, Bill joined the Saskatchewan Horse Regiment, and in 1944, he was shipped to England. He fought in France, took part in D-Day after which he was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner of war in a camp outside of Munich. When the war ended, Bill was released from the prison camp but almost immediately was hospitalized in England with tuberculosis. When he was well enough to return to Canada, he continued to convalescence in Regina until he was honorably discharged from the army. In 1951, Doris and Bill moved to Lethbridge where Bill found various jobs until finally joining the Canadian Postal Service as a letter carrier, a position he held for 25 years until an injury on the job forced his retirement in 1976. Bill and Doris treasured their retirement years together sharing them with their children and extended family. Bill was a kind and unassuming man who will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
