MRS. BETTY JOYCE KARAPITA nee Carlson, beloved wife of Mr. Mervin ‘Red’ Karapita of Lethbridge, passed away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre, Palliative Care on Monday, August 20, 2007 at the age of 69 years. Besides her loving husband of 42 years, Betty is survived by her children Dana Karapita of Claresholm and Kent Karapita of Claresholm. Betty is also survived by her sister-in-law Ann Carlson and her family Lorna (Lloyd) and Graeme (Tammy) and their daughter Kaylin, sister-in-law Sylvia (Bud) Moan and their family Warren, Pam and Kim, sister-in-law Iris Dixon and her son Alan as well as numerous other relatives in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ireland. She was predeceased by her parents Ted and Lavinia Carlson and brother Gordon Carlson. Born on July 23, 1938, Betty grew up in Champion. After school she attended the Galt School of Nursing and graduated in 1960. This was a special time for Betty as she became very close with her classmates, and they developed sister like relationships that have lasted and only gotten stronger over the last 47 years. After becoming a nurse, Betty spent a year working in Hawaii, she then returned to Alberta and moved to the Wetaskiwin area where she met and married Mervin ‘Red’ in 1965. Betty and Red and their two sons moved to Lethbridge in 1988. For most of her career as a nurse she worked in home care. Betty loved people, and was always up for an adventure as long as she had someone to share it with. She loved to go walking and her favourite place was around Henderson Lake. Betty and her husband spent the last few years wintering in Parker, Arizona. Wherever Betty went she made friends as she sought to love people unconditionally. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Special thanks goes out to St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit, the Galt Class of 1960 and all the friends and family who offered support to Betty and her family. A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Darrin Parkin officiating.
