MRS. LYDIA BETKE passed away on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 71 years after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
She was born on March 15, 1939 to Edward and Julianna Fiedler in Lubiel, Poland. Lydia, her parents and siblings immigrated to Canada in 1952 and settled in the Picture Butte area. She went to school in Picture Butte, McNally and Coaldale. After High School she received her Nursing Aide certificate and worked at various hospitals in Calgary, Brooks and Medicine Hat.
In 1968 she married Alfred Betke and settled in the Readymade area where they raised their three children. In 1996, Lydia and Alfred moved to Coaldale and remained there until her passing.
Lydia was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and had a firm belief in the resurrection hope and living forever in perfect health in paradise on earth.
She was known by her friends for her hospitality and baking, especially her “butterhorns”. She enjoyed gardening and music. Recently, she had learned to play the harmonica and would take the opportunity to play for others whenever possible.
She is survived by her husband Alfred, her children Evelyn, David and Rose (Stephen) Sharko, and her grandchildren, Ethan and Cameron.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Reinhold, Julius and Siegmund Fiedler as well as her sister Gertrude Krueger.
A Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., on Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M.
A Private Family graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery on Friday, October 1, 2010 with a Memorial Service to follow at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. with Mr. Mark Thompson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Lydia’s name to the Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta, 1254-3 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 0J9.
