BERGEN, HANS

MR. HANS BERGEN passed away on August 17, 2010 at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit following a courageous battle with cancer.

Hans was born on February 13, 1940 in the Ukraine.  After the war, his family moved to Paraguay for eight years, then to Vauxhall, AB. and finally to Coaldale, AB.  Upon graduating from Kate Andrews High School, Hans attended the University of Alberta and began his teaching career in Grassy Lake, AB. in 1965.  In 1967, he began teaching at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge, a position he held until his retirement in 1995.

Hans was a quiet and considerate person who cared deeply for his family and his profession.  He was an outstanding chemistry teacher who always went the extra mile for his students.  He also helped conduct countless sporting activities for young people at school and in the community.  He loved to golf, to fish and to socialize with family and friends.

Hans was predeceased by his parents Heinrich and Maria Bergen. He was the proud father of Curtis (Jasmine) and grandfather to Chase. He is also survived by his brother Henry (Anne-Marie) Bergen of Calgary, his sister Herta (Rudy) Wedell of Abbotsford, B.C. and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, Alberta, on Tuesday August 24, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Ruth Preston Schilk officiating.
