BABKI, ROBERT

MR. ROBERT “BOB” BABKI, beloved husband of Mrs. Bonnie Babki of Lethbridge, passed away suddenly at Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, October, 30 2010 at the age of 68 years. He will be greatly missed by his family, his dear wife Bonnie, sons Brett, Blake (Jodie) and Burke and grandchildren Hannah and Noah. Also mourning his passing are his brother Fred Halsey of Edmonton, brother-in-law Bob (Helen) Knowlden of Port Alice, sister-in-law Beverley (Jerry) Gray of Regina and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was born and raised in Lethbridge by his equally fierce-minded mother Grace, who predeceased him in 1996. He met and married his high school sweetheart here, raised his sons here, worked and lived his lifetime in this community, achieving notoriety in his later years for his many letters to the Lethbridge Herald. Bob was many things. In his youth, he was an athlete, obtaining a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers in his teens, starring on the LCI basketball team and earning Athlete of the Year honours at the University of Calgary in 1962. Bob was a distinguished lawyer. He graduated from the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 1967 and articled with the firm Rice, Paterson, Prowse, MacLean, Yanosik and Jacobson. He appeared before every level of Alberta Court, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada where he successfully changed interpretation of law. Bob was a builder in his community. He was appointed chairman of the Board of Governors of the Lethbridge Community College at age 29. He was a founding member of the Lethbridge Athletic Association and a youth baseball coach, taking teams to three Canadian Championships and winning two of them. Bob became an avid on-line investor after retiring from the practice of law, developing a keen interest in finance. Honing that interest and marrying it to his passion for justice drove him to become a self-appointed political watchdog. Regrettably, his enthusiasm for this most recent phase of his life was cut short far too soon. A Memorial Service will be held at the COAST HOTEL, 526 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation - Heart Function Clinic Fund, 960 - 19 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1J 1W5.
