Besides his loving wife, Mia, Tony is survived by his children: Bernard of Lethbridge; Carolyn of Gainsville, FL; Denise of Calgary; John of Coalhurst and Michelle of Calgary; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Holland.

He was predeceased by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters, and his grandson, Scott.

After the initial shock and sadness over the diagnosis, he accepted it with great dignity and grace in keeping with his unshakable positive approach to everything in his life. He had a beautiful brain and a passion for using his creativity, ingenuity and perfectionism to craft wonderful works of art out of found materials. He enjoyed biking, curling, reading and keeping his body and mind strong and sharp. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was a determined farmer who immigrated from Holland as a young man with Mia by his side to build a life in Canada. He taught us the importance of working hard and instilled a strong work ethic in all of us. He gave back to his church and community and will be remembered for his quirky sense of humor.

We will cherish the memories we have of him forever.

We’d like to thank the wonderful Palliative Care staff at St. Michael’s Health Centre for their exceptional care in his final weeks.

A Viewing will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at 6:00 P.M., with a Prayer Service celebrating Tony’s life to follow at 7:00 P.M. with Sharon Hagel officiating.

Dear Mia, cousins, and family, It’s so sad that Tony is no longer with us. He reached the beautiful age of 93, and lived such a rich and loving life. I remember his warm presence with a smile, the mischievous sparkle in his eyes and his wonderful sense of humor. He always asked me if I was still ‘playin’ football’ (voetbal’n), that will always stay with me. I admired his gentleness and zest for life, no matter his age. Tony was truly a special person, a warm soul who brought light wherever he went. I’m sending you all much strength, love, and comfort during this time of farewell. May the beautiful memories of Tony warm your hearts and bring peace. With a warm hug, Hanne, Fontessa, Neve & Jovi

Long ago, I visited Tony and his wife Mia in Lethbridge. I still remember how proudly he drove us around his land, showing us the vast canola fields and all the land belonging to his farm. At the time of my visit, I was still living in Netherlands and didn’t yet fully appreciate the vast Canadian landscape and hardship that comes with it. Now, as a fellow Dutch man living in Canada, I have come even more to admire even more what Tony and his family have achieved after migrating to Canada. Every time I met Tony at one of the Austie family reunions, he was always cheerful and upbeat. My mother, the youngest of the Austie family, spoke fondly of Tony and their childhood together. As some of my cousins have said, Tony’s passing marks the end of a remarkable Austie generation. I wish Mia, Berny, Carolyn, Denise, John & Michelle strength and peace as they grieve the loss of Tony.

Dear tante Mia, Bernie, Carolyn, Denise, John and Michelle, My condolences with the loss of your husband, father and the youngest brother of my father. Love to you all.

Bernadette Austie, August 4, 2025

Due to his emigration to Canada I have met my uncle Tony only at very few occasions, but I remember him as a cheerful uncle who liked to uphold old traditions that he knew from his youth and that slowly were vanishing here. I have the greatest respect what he and his wife built up in a foreign country so successfully. With his passing the last of his generation of the Austie family died. Farewell uncle Tony.

We are saddened to hear of Tony’s passing but glad to have been able to visit with him and Mia just a few months ago. Our friendship formed when back in the ‘70s I came to help the team of Austie, Tanis, and Bergen Henengouwen with the sugar beet harvest. Many good memories of our visits during that time, especially when tea was brought to the field in the afternoon. Our deepest condolences to Tony’s family. May the love of family and friends give you strength during this difficult time. Jim and Donna
