Andriashyk, Olive

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of OLIVE ANDRIASHYK on Sunday May 31, 2015, at the age of 5 weeks short of 101 years. Her family has been blessed with her presence in their lives and they celebrate her longevity and strength of spirit.

Olive was born on July 7, 1914 on the family farm in Garland, Manitoba to Pearl and George Karpiak, the third of seven children. Since she was born during a busy farming season her birth was not registered and made legal until August 15, 1914.

She received her schooling in Garland and Ethelbert, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg to attend Business College. At the age of 19 she moved to Toronto where she worked at de Havilland Aircraft and the Canadian Postal Service during the Second World War. She moved back to Winnipeg following the war and then on to Calgary. In 1955 she met and married John Andriashyk and soon after moved their Swedish Massage business to Lethbridge where she became his assistant and bookkeeper. Following John's death in 1981, Olive worked at Stokes Drugs and Skelton's Jewelry until her retirement.

Olive's greatest love was her family. Her mother lived to be 98 years old and she spent many years caring for her both in her home and at the Lethbridge Auxiliary Hospital. She always opened her home to visiting family members and friends. She loved to prepare big family meals and bake delicious desserts, enjoyed working in her garden and watching the birds, knitted beautiful intricate sweaters and loved to shop. She walked everywhere she went and got to know all of the staff in the stores she shopped in. She took pride in her appearance, had a good sense of humour and loved to tease. She loved a well set table, a tidy home, a garden full of flowers and a good cup of tea with honey. A large number of her family were present last year to celebrate Olive's 100th birthday. It was so fitting that the biggest cheerleader of the Karpiak family was the one who gathered us all together.

Olive was predeceased by her parents Pearl and George Karpiak, her husband John Andriashyk, brothers Michael (Nell) Karpiak, Harold (Ann) Karpiak, Walley Karpiak, Gerald Karpiak, sister Jean (John) Mushey, nephew Kenneth Karpiak, nephew (in law) Bob Pirie.

Olive is survived by her brother Manuel Karpiak of Calgary, sister in laws Alice Karpiak of Chelan, WA, and Mary Karpiak of Vancouver. NEPHEWS: Dennis (Robyn) Karpiak of Kamloops, Gordon (Carolynn) Mushey of Winnipeg, Tim (Christine) Karpiak of Brentwood, B.C., Joe Karpiak of Phoenix, David (Cindy) Karpiak of Kamloops. NIECES: Pat Pirie of Calgary, Sally (Gordon) Burnet of Seattle, Shirley (Rob) Force of Wenatchee, WA, Linda (James) Lewington of Calgary, Susan (Brad) Johnson of Wenatchee, WA, Judy (Jim) Roelofs of Lethbridge, Debbie (Wayne) Leslie of Calgary and Melody Karpiak of Vancouver and all their families.

A Private family graveside service will be held in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday, June 6, 2015.

Cremation Entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home.
