Dr. Al was a devoted husband to Barbara since their marriage in 1964.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Billett, their three kids – Debra (Les) Billett Greeno, James (Stephanie) Billett, and Lori (Colin) Billett Zieber. Much joy was brought to him by his great grandkids – JJ, Nash & Ellie Greeno, Amber, Mataya & Sadie Greeno, Montana & Memphis Wong.
Dr. Al is also survived by his brothers and sister, Larry, Karen & John Billett (Danielle Goulet) and Barb’s siblings – Winston (Janet) South, Duncan (Maxine) South, Betty (Murray) Green & Marjorie (Glenn) Heisler. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his dad and mom, Thomas & Esther Billett - his sister-in-law, Vi Billett – and his father-in-law and mother-in law, Gordon and Mary South.
Dr. Al was born on October 8, 1941 in Eston, Saskatchewan to Tom and Esther Billett. He won awards for his clarinet musical performances and was able to help pay for his medical school by playing in dance bands. He was in his internship when he went on his first date with Barb, a registered nurse. They went to a movie, but he was so tired that he fell asleep in the middle of it. With a chuckle, he commented, “But she married me anyway.”
Barb and Alan moved to La Ronge, Saskatchewan with their young family to start Alan’s medical practice. Dr. Al’s motivation was to provide quality medical care to the Indigenous People surrounding that area. Bush pilots often flew him in to “fly in only” areas to assist in whatever way he was needed. Due to flying in terrifying conditions with these pilots, he became a pilot himself just in case he ever needed to take over the controls. Dr. Al continued to fly into his 70’s.
After 7 years, Alan, Barbara & their 3 kids moved to Lethbridge. Dr. Al spent the rest of his career working at Bigelow Fowler Clinic South. He truly cared for his colleagues and patients over the many years at Bigelow Fowler Clinic South. He was a mentor, father figure and friend to so many. He was 72 years old when he retired.
Dr. Al loved his family and made it his mission to instill in them a love of music and a solid sense of rhythm. Dr. Al also made it a priority to teach his kids to appreciate humour and laughter. With syncopated rhythms and offbeat humour, the Billett home was filled with laughter and music.
Above all else, Dr. Al demonstrated the love of Jesus to everyone around him. He was kind and gracious, not easily offended and he loved people.
We believe Dr. Al is now in heaven – visiting and joking with those who have gone before him, joining in the highest quality big band, and giving hugs to those whom we miss so much.
Special thanks to LeAnn Esau, Isabel Crown and all of his incredible caregivers who helped to keep him in his own home until the end.
A private Family Service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation or the Lethbridge Pregnancy Care Centre.
Arrangements to be made by Cornerstone Funeral Home.
